Klaipeda is an active, internationally minded city. For international cooperation and propagation of European unity ideas on the local level, it was awarded with the most prominent distinctions a city can be bestowed with: in 1999 - with the Council of Europe Flag of Honour, in 2001 – with the Council of Europe Plague of Honour, and in 2003 – the Europe Prize of the Council of Europe – the main prize awarded to a single town among 45 countries belonging to the Council of Europe.
