Since the 14th century Klaipeda had become one of the major education centers in Lithuania Minor. At present 2 universities and 5 colleges operate in Klaipeda. There is a wide network of general education schools teaching in two languages – Lithuanian and Russian (8). Those are gymnasiums, basic high schools, secondary schools, etc., a large network of pre-school educational institutions.
Klaipeda University was established in 1991. It is a state higher school, the only classical university in Western Lithuania. It provides studies in three degrees: Bachelor’s, Master’s and post-graduate studies, develops scientific cognition of various fields, carries out research and experimental development, prepares scientists.
Since the very foundation of the University it specialized in trends of scientific activity was mainly related to topicality of the coastal region of West Lithuanian economics, culture and art. Currently the University is oriented towards the scientific activity possibilities that open up in a wider context of the Baltic Region.
LCC International University is a nationally and internationally recognized liberal arts institution in the city of Klaipėda, Lithuania. Established in 1991 by a joint venture of Lithuanian, Canadian and American foundations, LCC has distinguished itself in the region by offering a unique, future-oriented style of education and an interactive academic environment. The LCC education places broad-based education within the context of a Christian academic community in order to extend education beyond the classroom.
The Republic of Lithuania recognizes LCC as a Bachelor's and Master's Degrees granting university. Students can choose different Bachelor degree programs of study (International Business Administration, Contemporary Communication, English Language and Literature, Psychology, Theology, Theology/International Business Administration) taught by more than 50 instructors coming from Western Europe, North America, and Lithuania. LCC also offers an online M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Foreign Language) and Master of Business Administration in cooperation with a leading American academic institution – Taylor University (Indiana, USA).
There are 7 state and non-state colleges, Eduardas Balsys‘ Art Gymnasium, more than 10 gymnasiums, Stasys Šimkus‘ Conservatoire, 7 vocational schools.
The special abilities of Klaipeda pupils are developed at specialized art, sports and different other profile schools.
